Stowe has long been regarded as the “Ski Capital of the East”, but outdoor adventurers and wilderness enthusiasts are certain to be delighted year-round by its offerings. Spring is sugaring season in Vermont, and the Stowe/Smugglers’ Notch area is bountiful in sugaring houses. Ridge-line hiking along the Long Trail is available year-round, although hikers are encouraged to stay on durable ground while the ground thaws in the Spring. Topped by Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest peak, Stowe offers novice hikers the opportunity in the summer to drive to the ridge line by the historic Toll Road. Experienced hikers and bikers are provided numerous access routes from easy to moderate hiking trails to challenging third-class scrambles and fifth-class climbs. Climbing adventures are available year-round in the Notch, ranging from long, multi-pitch ice climbs in the winter, to world-class bouldering and multi-pitch rock routes in the summer. Mountain bikers and road bikers will also find Stowe to be a great place to stay. More than 40 miles of single track are available for the moderate to experienced mountain-biker, while the paved, Stowe bike trail provides a leisurely ride for novices. Steep winding mountain roads provide a challenge for even the most hearty of street cycling enthusiasts. Fall is perhaps the most brilliant time to explore Stowe, Vermont. Leaf peeping peaks between the end of September and mid-October when the mountains glow a brilliant orange and red.
